The accuracy of ad personalization is growing every year, while privacy issues are becoming more acute. There are many stories on the Internet about “sinister targeting” – advertising content on websites and in social networks, which frighteningly accurately corresponded to the user’s requests or obsessively reminded him of unpleasant events. WIRED magazine recently wrote about a girl who had a failed wedding, but for several months she received targeted special offers for newlyweds, and online stores persistently reminded her of her anniversary.

Sponsored messages also change content and tone, adapting to the views of different audience segments. For example, the oil company Exxon shows liberals content that expresses its concern for the environment, while conservatives, on the contrary, issues a link to a petition against the regulation of the oil industry. There are other precedents when algorithms know more about a person than himself. For example, TikTok often offers content to users by anticipating and even predicting their preferences, such as sexual orientation. Historian and futurologist Yuval Noah Harari wrote about this – he suggested that at some stage, machine learning-based algorithms began to control our tastes and even our will.

However, the possibilities of an advertising target are often overestimated. For example, the assumptions about wiretapping, which our smartphones are conducting in the background, have not yet been confirmed, although some applications do collect audio data with the permission of users (only we give it unconsciously, mindlessly ticking the Terms & Conditions). In many cases, we build conspiracy theories around banal coincidences. So, in the early 2010s, the media spread a story about a teenage girl who hid her pregnancy from her parents. But a promotional mailing from Target supermarket betrayed her position – the company sent the girl discount coupons for clothes and furniture for babies, and the family learned about the secret pregnancy. Many facts in this story do not agree, and even data analysts question the story – trading networks regularly hold promotions for certain goods, and this is just such a case.

In addition, AI opens up new possibilities that simply did not exist before. Of course, now AI is one of the most demanded areas, because the modern world and the modern economy are increasingly based on data, the amount of which is constantly growing every day. It is data that is the basis, the “breeding ground” for AI. Today, our world has entered the process of digital transformation, and it has affected absolutely all sectors of the economy; many large companies today are carrying out large-scale digitalization and transformation of their industries.

Machine learning is becoming more accessible, technology is being “democratized” and more and more people and businesses can create convenient services. Nowadays, almost all global corporations have a machine learning unit.

We see how truly unique solutions are being launched that can compete with Western counterparts, and possibly have no analogues at all. But to say that we use our potential in the field of AI development by 90% or even 80% would not be entirely correct. We need more initiatives, competitions, where projects could declare themselves, receive grants for further development, communicate with experienced experts, and acquire skills that will be useful to them in practical implementation.

In education, there is also a shift in popular professions: today most of them are in one way or another connected with digitalization, so the demand for such specialties is growing among students. Many new disciplines and programs are also emerging at universities that help in the development of the necessary skills and competencies.

If we talk about the development of AI in a 5-year perspective, then we can safely say that it will become a tool and assistants in the hands of experienced and competent specialists. It’s not about where AI will be in the future, but how people and their habits will change from the introduction of this technology. In 5 years, a new generation will grow up, for whom the digital world will already be a natural environment. This means that many things that still seem fantastic can become quite commonplace. For example, personalized medicine or AI will be able to match your clothes, fly planes, and very easily integrate into your daily life.

This article focuses on the use of machine learning to prevent customer churn. Using the example of one client, we will show how to identify a need, a problem, a solution, and key benefits.

Customer churn is the term used when an existing customer stops using a company and / or stops buying its products. In other words, the client decides to sever their ties with the company. Some types of churn cannot be prevented – for example, moving to another country. This outflow is classified as a non-targeted outflow. In this article, we’ll focus on another class of customer churn – addressed churn.

Problem: A leading multinational bank focuses on private banking. The bank has faced an increased outflow of clients over the past period due to increased competition in the market. The bank possesses a large volume of customer data, but does not use it effectively.

In addition, the bank wants to understand the factors affecting capital outflows so that they can be more proactive in addressing such issues, and not just react after the fact. The real challenge and need is to reduce churn, stabilize the business, and increase profits.

Solution: Using an AI-based platform, the bank began to detect characteristics that caused customer churn. These patterns were identified automatically by the sophisticated machine learning algorithms underlying them. In addition, the customer churn profile has identified high-yield customers at risk. Proactive campaigns are now running regularly to ensure they can retain such customers before they leave.

As we saw in the example above, one of the leading multinational banks was able to use an AI-powered platform to understand why their customers are leaving. Now they can actively fight capital flight. Note that all insights were discovered automatically, without spending 100 hours manually discovering the data or writing a single line of code.

The system used the underlying machine learning algorithms to answer specific business questions and discover hidden insights in the data.

Bank employees can now clearly understand the profiles of customers who leave. They can reach out to existing customers who fit that profile and take proactive steps to reduce churn.
